Touring Charleston, SC with Marilyn and Carl G.

Ellen and her girl friends from high school met for the weekend at the Hersey Resort. This was a very nice group of girls and it is fun to see them together again. This summer they have a 20 year reunion from high school. Jack and I have our 50th year reunion. It is all so hard to believe. I just not not see myself as that OLD.

It is wonderful when you like and get along with your daughter's in laws. We love this couple and met them in Charleston ,SC for fun as they drove north from FL to NJ. So we had two full days of touring. Dinner at Magnolia Rest. And SNOB. We did the city tour. Walked and shopped through the city market. Had a docent give us a tour of the Jewish Temple, and walked the streets. We spent one whole days at the Magnolia Plantation.

Carl is go to get a knee replacement next month. He walked with a cane. He was a very good sport. The weather was cold.

Magnolia Plantation

Slave houses. Two families duplex

Single slave house

Live oak trees

The owner planted acres of gardens. Or should I say he had the slaves play them. It was beautiful and we walked paths all over the place.

There was bamboo over 30 feet high.

We took a boat tour in the rice patties fields. The plantation owners made fortunes from the farming of rice. It ended after the Civil War as there were no slaves to farm it.

Here is Abe's science fair project. Subject is , what is the prime age for a male, female to throw a football? The boy does love and always think about sports!

Friday with Shirley and a large group of Sea Pines women at the spring luncheon. Katherine Wall spoke about her 11 books that she wrote about the low country and Hilton Head. She was a good speaker and funny.
My friend Janet D does colored pencil drawings. Here are some of her art works. I could not believe how beautiful they were and done from pencils.

We had dinner at Thea H house. She served something my mother made all the time when we were growing up. jello with ice cream.
1 large package of jello, 4 cups of water. Mix together and then add 1 pint of ice cream. I think my mother let the jello get a little solid first and then added the ice cream.

Here comes the Hilton Head Heritage Golf Tournament

On Sunday April 14 we took a bike ride around Harbor town and looked at all the preparations for the event.

On the eighteenth hole looking toward Harbor Town. Our bikes are parked on the left. This is before the tournament. Notice there are few boats in the Harbour.

The eighteenth hole before the tourist and golfers arrive. The stands are on the left. Tents for the TV crews. Food tents being set up. You can see tents in the back of the picture.

This is a security guard at the gate into Sea Pines. He is dressed in the tartan plaid of the tournament . He is lucky it is going to be cool this week.

Saturday of the tournament . We went in the afternoon and walked some of the holes. The Diamonds used the ticket in the AM and we used it in the PM. The young college age men ALL seem to be drunk! So much drinking! The girls are dressed in little dresses and look cute. And everyone is They are wearing heels and we had a ton of rain last night. Your shoes sink into the grass.
Harbour full with big boats. They are filled with people drinking.

Volunteer holding up a sign that says QUIET.

Blimp in the sky.

Jack standing in front of a large screen TV. Foods vendor all around.

Man wearing his kilt. Looks like Santa Claus went on a diet! Some men wear them to the event. As do the announcers on the holes.

Sitting in the stands watching the golf players.

Pro players at the putting green.

A neighbor sent an email that she was having her wood floors varnished and needed a house to sleep that night. They had a leak in the bathtub that went down to the first floor. They are new to the street. I met the women for five minutes at an open house. With the golf tournament going on, I doubt they could have found a hotel for the night. So I emailed back that I had three empty bedrooms. They brought flowers, took us out to dinner and we had a enjoyable evening.
Picture of Jann And Ed, our new friends and house guests.

We went out for dinner with friends that used to live in Fox Chapel. They now live in an independent living place in HHI. The food was good. They have a lovely apartment. The man plays tennis with Jack and is good at 80 years old. Sadly the wife is showing signs of dementia. She asked the same questions over and over. He was very kind with her.

Boston marathon and two bombs were thrown in the crowds.
Three wonderful people killed and a cop later in the week. The city was on lock down for one complete day. Everyone was told to stay inside their homes. Everything was cancelled in the city. For most of the week the city was in a war zone. Police and military everywhere. 150 people injured and many people lost limbs. The medical staff had never seen, worked on such injuries. That is what is seen in war. We can be so proud of the city of Boston after this event. The first killer was shot dead and the second was found hiding inside a boat in someone's backyard.
Picture of the four killed. The boy had a sister lose a leg. Mother with brain injury and a sister not hurt. The father had just finished the race and hugged Martin Richard. There is a picture of the bomber in back of Martin standing on the street. The one girl was from China studying statistics in Boston.
A sad week in the USA. There was also a fire at a fertilizer plant in West, TX and many people died and were injured there. And an earthquake in China with 150 dead and 4000 missing , injured.

4 people killed from the bombers.

Martin picture taken last year at a peace rally.

Man lost both his legs. The one man is holding closed his artery in his fingers, so he would not bleed to death. One one man was just a bystander that jumped into action. Picture taken in the hospital.

Friday with Shirley and The other Ruth
We rode our bikes to the golf tournament in Harbour Town. Ate lunch at the bakery and shopped and walked around. The skies were cloudy and the rain was coming. It held out until we got home. This boat is quite large and usually parked in the Harbour.

We had the deck and dock painted this week. Getting some rooms painted in the house. Had a gutter fixed that a squirrel ate through. Roof repaired.
Window and blinds cleaned. Kitchen faucet that had a little leak replaced. Drains in bathrooms cleaned. We are getting ready for the rental season.
Did I ever tell you - a southern house is a money pit.
The trees are dropping junk. This is what fell in two days. So much because of all the rain and wind. You must have a good blower here. I did not buy a good enough one years ago. It does not have enough power to do the entire driveway some times.

After staining.
