First set of steps. We all used walking sticks. PAVEL kept saying, drink your water. Put the sun block on. Hats on!
Faces is carved in mountain. Can not see in photo.
Storage areas in mountain
Built in pre Inca times. The stones are not laid as well as the rest of the area.
Better stone work and terraced area.
The valley from the top.
This is the temple mount. They brought all the massive granite up here. They came from a quarry down the mountains, over a river and far away.
Town below the Sacred valley.
This is a school. Looks pretty poor.
The terraced hill.
We then visited a woman that makes corn beer. She showed us how to make it and we sampled the beer. We played the game that Peruvians play.
The pink beer had strawberries in it. Tasted good.
You throw coins into , at this and see who gets the most points. The coins fall into the drawer.
We went to a school. It is summer vacation but children are there that need extra learning. The tour company assists the school with money and supplies. They are building new bathrooms. They put in a computer center and covered area for the students to eat. We talked, sang and had a good time with third graders. Asked what they wanted to be when they grow up-- many girls want to be doctors and teachers. They boys want to be chefs, they see family working in the hotels, and policemen. Our guide said that only about 5% will make it to college. The education is not good in the country. They will not be able to pass the tests. We did not see books anywhere in the room. All children in Peru must go to school.
Then we went to the market area . Masses of people. Many in the old Traditional clothing. Women with short skirts, tall hats, colorful scarfs, and babies being carried on their backs. Selling everything, the clothing area and shoes were piled with items.
A father and son in traditional cloths came walking in the market. Our guide stopped him to talk and for us to take photos. We all gave him coins for him cooperation. They had walked for miles. They lived in the mountains far away. The custom is for the son and father to dress alike. They was identical down to the sandals. Their feet were so dirty. The boys face was dark from dirt. The family had four sons. They came to the market to by supplies they could not grow themselves.
The drive to the lunch was in a motorcycle taxi. The roads are all pot wholes and I though the driver was lost. And then we arrived at the house.
Then we went to a home hosted lunch. There was a flood in the town two years ago. These people lost their house. The tour company helped them rebuild it. The dining room is painted the yellow of the company. They have three children. One son is in college. The daughter wants to go to college to study tourism but there is no money. One more daughter just graduated from high school. The husband works at our hotel.
The kitchen, cooking stove is in a separate building. We leaned how to make stuffed peppers with a batter cover and fried. The sink, cold water only is outside. The refig is in the house in one room and a stove with oven is in one other room.
See the yellow walls.
We had squash soup. Rice, beef stew, a thing like mash potatoes that is a bean protein, corn and Guinea pig that the wife raises in the yard. I could not eat it. It is a special meal for people here. Dessert was a kind of pear cooked in molasses.
We then went to a very famous potters studio and house. The art work,is beautiful but we did not buy. Pablo Seminarie
Before dinner tonight, PAVEL taught us how to make a special drink. Then off the a chicken dinner that was fair.
It was a very full and wonderful day. We are so tired.
